Reading and writing in English, these two are I learned so much in Japan. Japanese people don't have a chance to speak English in a English class, so they know grammar and how to write an essay properly but not how to speak. From these experiences, I felt I didn't need reading and writing classes when I came here. I wanted to speak a lot, which I was hoping. However, When I started last session, I found that all reading, writing, and speaking were related, especially writing and speaking were so similar for me.
When I didn't have variety of sentences in writing, I didn't have many ways to speak either. In speaking, tone and rhythm are important to attract people; at the same way, they are important in writing. For example, the way to represent these things is using a short sentence or a rhyme in an essay or some other writings, which makes readers read easily. Since I have been studying writing a lot, I can use [or try to use] various kinds of sentences in my speaking. I can feel that writing helps improving my speaking as well.
p.s. Since I like taking pictures, I will put some pictures in my blog :)

Same here. Like in Japan, we don't have many opportunities to speak English in class. However, I found out that all section of English such as writing, reading, speaking, and listening is related to each other as you said. I'm so excited studying all of them at ELI. Also, I'm so happy to have you as my classmate!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Such a lovely picture!
I never thought of the connection between writing and speaking, for me they have been always two separate things. For example writing as I used to view it is a formal way of communication which requires people to stick to number of words that aren't used in the daily live as spoken language. However, I was wrong. I remember my S&L teachers always emphasis on using proper words, sentence structure, transitions etc... . The most important thing I learned in my S&L which i keep reminding myself to use is following the essay structure. I mean to introduce my ideas, give details and conclude with a summary. Hmmm Making the long story short, I want to say yes I agree with you that both skills are interrelated.

I'm afraid how I can keep speaking when I go back to Japan.. It's easy to forget English, especially speaking. I belive that one of helpful ways is writing..
